I’ve always loved to cook, although, let’s be honest, cooking for a family of ten presents its share of limits and challenges. Regardless, I still enjoy pouring over cookbooks in search of something fresh and new to serve my family.

On My Mom Bucket List

A few years back, I decided to throw all caution to the wind and enrolled in a French cooking class at a chic restaurant in a nearby city. I arrived at my first class full of moxie and enthusiasm, only to find the snootiest-looking students dressed in their chef-wannabe finest. I showcased my best mom gear—a non-stained sweatsuit.

Though I wanted to run, I also wanted to learn the fine art of making a delectable roux, melt-in-your-mouth pastry, and at least one signature dish that didn’t involve chicken nuggets. Determined to succeed, I parked it next to a twenty-something version of Julia Child and prayed the class would be taught in English at least.

Two weeks into the class, I was clearly learning with professional students who had skill levels years beyond mine. I decided to stay the course but would have to let go of the outcome. Even though I felt like a culinary buffoon in front of the others who could make pastry blindfolded, I would be happy as long as I learned one new French technique to wow my family with. Anything else I learned would be gravy—a pan sauce anyway.

The Outcome

By week ten, I had lightened up so much; yours truly not only made the best Coq Au Vin in the class, but I also met several new young and hip friends—and we still get together to cook.

I also have a signature dish to turn to whenever a celebration dinner is in order.
